The Board of Trustees at Montclair State University has officially welcomed Modia “Mo” Butler as its newest member. Butler is a public affairs expert with extensive experience in government relations, political campaigns, and strategic communications. His appointment was confirmed at the board meeting on February 5, 2025.
Butler’s appointment comes from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, with advice and consent from the State Senate. Currently a partner at Mercury Public Affairs, Butler advises clients across sectors such as government, real estate development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and nonprofits.
Montclair President Jonathan Koppell expressed his enthusiasm for Butler joining the board: “We are pleased to welcome Mo to our Board. His extensive experience in government and nonprofit organizations will be an outstanding addition and will help us achieve our goals in creating life-changing student outcomes.”
Butler himself stated his eagerness to contribute: “I am excited to join the Montclair State University Board of Trustees. The University is quickly becoming recognized as an innovator in the higher education space. I look forward to working with President Koppell and the Board to ensure that Montclair continues to be an institution of opportunity for New Jersey’s students.”
Before joining Mercury Public Affairs, Butler served as chief of staff for United States Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). During his tenure there, he played significant roles in initiatives like jumpstarting the Gateway Project and securing funding for Hurricane Sandy relief.
In addition to these roles, Butler was a senior advisor during Senator Booker’s campaigns for United States Senate and his presidential bid in 2020. Prior to his time in Washington D.C., he served as Chief of Staff when Booker was Mayor of Newark.
For over ten years, various media outlets have recognized Butler among New Jersey’s most influential political figures. He holds degrees from Franklin & Marshall College and Rutgers University’s Eagleton Institute of Politics.
Butler also chairs the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), serves as a trustee at Franklin & Marshall College, and sits on the board of New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).
Board Chair Kent Sluyter acknowledged Governor Murphy’s choice: “We thank Governor Murphy for appointing someone as accomplished as Mo Butler to our Board. He will be an excellent addition to our Board, and we look forward to working with him.”
