At Montclair State University, a significant portion of the incoming class this fall comprises first-generation students. In celebration of National First-Generation Celebration Day on November 8, these students and alumni shared insights aimed at helping others navigate college life.
Sarai Nam, a senior majoring in Social Media and Public Relations, emphasized the importance of building a supportive community. “As a first-generation student, it’s really important to build a supportive community because college isn’t something you should go through alone,” she stated.
Andrew Suarez, another senior studying Exercise Science, highlighted the challenges of navigating college without family guidance. “Seeking mentorship from professors, advisors, and peers made a big difference for me,” he said.
Sophomore Sara Castiblanco pointed out that asking questions is crucial. “Professors are here to teach, but they’re also willing to help us with questions,” she noted.
Angela Castro, a junior in Child Advocacy and Policy, shared her initial struggles. “The hardest thing for me to navigate as a first-generation student was knowing how to ask for the help and resources I needed,” she explained.
Claudio Josuel Alejo ’19 MA reflected on his experience as both a first-gen student and an elder sibling. He advised seeking help early: “I wish I’d taken advantage of that sooner.”
Dulce Meneses recounted her leap into campus life during COVID-19 as pivotal. Alvert Hernandez encouraged embracing uncomfortable conversations for personal growth.
Montclair’s event marked the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Office Student Belonging honored students and staff with the Trailblazer Achievement Award for their leadership within the first-gen community.
Awarded staff members included Jerryl H. Sharif and Julia DelBagno. Guest speaker Alvert Hernandez discussed strategies for supporting first-gen student retention and success.
