Montclair State University has initiated New Jersey’s first public university facilities apprenticeship program. This program offers specialized training in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC trades to its employees. The initiative aims to facilitate career advancement for internal staff and create a skilled workforce ready for new opportunities at the university.
The program aligns with Montclair’s mission to support both academic and professional development by providing diverse learning pathways. It sets a precedent for facilities workforce training across the state.
The first apprentices include Daniel Miller on the plumber track, Jhoan Nogueira and David Lobafaro on the HVAC track, and Kevin Rizzo on the electrician track. These individuals come from various backgrounds within the university’s Facilities Department, such as groundskeeping, building maintenance, and mechanical work. Training and Development Manager Shakira Jackson noted their strong desire to acquire skills necessary for transitioning into these trades.
Daniel Miller has been with Montclair for nearly two decades, starting as a moving service worker. He is passionate about becoming a plumber and is a recipient of the John W. Dennis Award for exceptional leadership abilities.
The apprentices expressed gratitude for this opportunity to advance their skills. “I find joy in repairing, troubleshooting and completing tasks,” said Rizzo. Nogueira looks forward to earning his HVAC license through this program after studying independently.
While working on campus during the day, apprentices will attend evening technical classes at Passaic County Technical Institute. They will be mentored by Patrick Hickey, Kevin Johnson, Keith Benjamin, and Kevin Lepore.
Upon completing the four-year program, participants will be eligible for Journeyman status certification in their respective trades. Vice President for University Facilities Shawn Connolly emphasized that Montclair was eager to launch this program to ensure a steady supply of skilled workers as veteran employees retire. “This program aligns with the University’s mission to support both academic and professional growth,” Connolly stated.
The apprentices are part of the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers bargaining unit. The program is registered with the U.S. Department of Labor.
