Community and philanthropic partners, along with elected officials and Montclair State University, gathered on November 21 to launch the public phase of the One Square Mile initiative in Paterson, New Jersey. This effort aims to revitalize a specific area of Paterson, having commenced in February 2023.

The second phase follows a yearlong process of understanding community needs through the Paterson One Square Mile Community Advisory Committee. The initial pilot was supported by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

Phase 2 focuses on housing solutions for residents in Paterson’s first, fourth, and fifth wards over five years. Montclair President Jonathan Koppell remarked, “The Paterson One Square Mile is how big change happens… I can’t wait to see what happens next in Paterson, and across New Jersey.”

Amanda Lopez from Transform Consulting Group noted that over 500 residents identified housing as a priority. “We are excited to share this housing action plan and invite others to join in implementing the plan,” she said.

Statistics show an 11% population increase within One Square Mile’s area over ten years. Residents face high overcrowding rates and rent burdens, with only 8% being homeowners.

Montclair State University and Transform Consulting Group have outlined five goals: expanding housing affordability; increasing supply and stability; improving quality; creating safe neighborhoods; and building assets and wealth.

Scott Millard from Passaic County Habitat for Humanity stated that evidence-based policies could lead to sustainable development. He urged local authorities to adopt these recommendations for lasting positive change.

This phase marks another step in Montclair State University’s growing partnership with the City of Paterson. Earlier this year, they opened The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium, focusing on Negro Leagues history while providing educational opportunities.
