Montclair State University has appointed Shea Scruggs as the new director of the John J. Cali School of Music, effective July 1, 2025. Scruggs, an experienced arts administrator and former professional oboist, brings a wealth of knowledge in music education and leadership to his new role.

Previously, Scruggs served at the Curtis Institute of Music as Chief Enrollment Officer and Director of Institutional Research and Musician Experience. During his tenure at Curtis, he led various initiatives focused on admissions and alumni engagement while enhancing opportunities within classical music.

Scruggs is a graduate of Swarthmore College, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. His career includes principal oboe positions with several prestigious orchestras such as the San Francisco Opera and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he is a founding member of the Black Orchestral Network, an organization promoting representation for Black musicians in classical music.

“I am thrilled to join this fantastic community…and continue the Cali School’s tradition of excellence,” said Scruggs. He emphasized his commitment to supporting faculty and empowering students in their artistic endeavors.

University leaders expressed enthusiasm about Scruggs’ appointment. “Shea’s extensive experience…uniquely positions him to build on the Cali School’s legacy,” stated Daniel Gurskis, Dean of the College of the Arts.

As director, Scruggs will focus on fostering growth and innovation at the school while maintaining its reputation for excellence in music education. The school offers various programs including degrees in music education and performance among others.

The John J. Cali School of Music engages over 500 students with support from 21 full-time faculty members and approximately 200 part-time instructors. It maintains relationships with professional organizations worldwide and launched significant initiatives like the Cali Pathways Project to reduce barriers for musicians from underserved communities.
