Montclair State University has been awarded the first Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification, joining an exclusive group of 25 U.S. colleges and universities. It is the only public institution in New Jersey and one of just 15 public institutions nationwide to receive this designation.

The elective classification is conferred by the American Council on Education, the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It recognizes institutions committed to advancing leadership aimed at promoting public goods such as justice, equity, diversity, and liberty.

Montclair State University offers various leadership development initiatives for students, faculty, and staff. These include:

– NextGen Service Corps: Prepares undergraduates from all disciplines for public service careers.
– The Bonner Leader Program: A four-year program providing civic engagement and public service opportunities.
– PSEG Green Teams: An internship program where student teams address sustainability issues for corporations, organizations, nonprofits, municipalities, and community groups.
– Leadership University: An eight-week employee development program for new managers.
– Higher Education Academic Leadership Program: Offers leadership development opportunities for faculty while addressing challenges in higher education.

Since its inception in 1908, Montclair State University has engaged in critical civic endeavors. Notable initiatives include One Square Mile, a community revitalization project in Paterson, N.J., and The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium.
