Montclair State University has been awarded a grant of $499,998 by the United States Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The funding aims to enhance domestic violence, sexual assault, and harassment education for underserved groups.

Montclair is among 19 institutions nationwide to receive this funding, which will be used to improve culturally specific programming. Over four years, the university plans to boost campus communication, training, and provide specialized education for students. Yolanda Alvarez and Adela Caceres will lead these efforts.

Adela Caceres noted, “By incorporating culturally specific strategies, we ensure that responses to sexual violence are not only compassionate yet relevant to the diverse identities and experiences of those affected.” She emphasized the approach promotes prevention education while offering support for healing.

Montclair State University remains committed to fostering an environment focused on self-advocacy, social responsibility, belonging, and personal wellness. Resources available include confidential counseling services and Title IX resources for both students and employees.

Vice President Dawn Meza Soufleris expressed gratitude: “We are deeply honored to receive this transformative grant from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.” She highlighted the importance of expanding education and outreach efforts particularly for underserved populations. Soufleris added that being one of only 19 institutions receiving such funding underscores Montclair’s commitment to creating a safe campus environment prioritizing prevention and empowerment.
