Montclair State University has been recognized in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Colleges rankings, showing improvement in several categories compared to previous years.

The university is ranked ninth nationally for social mobility among 434 national universities, moving up three spots from its position last year. Among public institutions, Montclair is tied for fifth place and holds the second spot in New Jersey for this category. Social mobility measures how well schools enroll and graduate students from low-income backgrounds.

In addition to its ranking for social mobility, Montclair State University improved its placement in the Best Value Schools category, rising to No. 177 from No. 205 last year. The institution also ranks No. 84 among national public universities.

President Jonathan Koppell commented on the rankings: “Montclair State University is a public-serving institution governed by a commitment to access and excellence,” he said. “We aim to provide transformational opportunities for our students, as well as their families and the many diverse communities they are a part of. Part of a Montclair education is helping learners become leaders who serve the public interest. We are proud to see Montclair State University once again recognized as a national leader in advancing social mobility and delivering exceptional value to our students.”

These results highlight Montclair’s ongoing efforts to support student achievement and affordability through increased access and support programs.
