As he completes his studies at Montclair State University, Connor Godek is pursuing his interest in sustainable agriculture. Godek, who majored in Nutrition and Food Studies with a concentration in Food Systems, is gaining practical experience at Lifecap Farms, an urban mushroom farm in Jersey City. There, he is involved in harvesting mushrooms for local restaurants and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) customers.

Looking back on his internship experience, Godek reflects on the farming challenges and the support he received at Montclair. “My goal after graduation is to work in agriculture and food systems, learning how food makes its way from farm to table. I want to help make that process more sustainable and efficient – especially as our population grows and climate challenges worsen,” he said.

At Lifecap Farms, Godek works with various tasks such as preparing growth bags, harvesting, and maintaining the greenhouses. He highlights the patience required for the job, stating that “there’s a rhythm to it – a patience you develop when your work may not show results for weeks.” Furthermore, Godek emphasizes his dedication to the work despite its difficulties, noting, “I’ve learned to keep going – even when it’s hard, dirty or exhausting.”

Godek also values community engagement, referring to their CSA program: “Our CSA program serves more than 40 local families each week. It’s incredible to know that the mushrooms I help grow end up on people’s plates. Giving back means recognizing the people and places that helped get you where you are – and lifting up the community in return.”

His education at Montclair combined theoretical and practical knowledge, covering topics such as sustainability, food safety, and global food policy. In his final semester, Godek took part in a course on wine appreciation taught by Adjunct Professor Stephen Fahy, where students explore wine through sight, smell, and taste.

The article is part of a broader series that highlights Montclair State University’s graduates for Spring Commencement 2025. The university will hold its commencement ceremonies on May 7 and 8 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Prospective students or parents interested in learning more about Montclair admissions and the Nutrition and Food Studies program can find additional information at the College for Community Health.
