New Jersey State Senator and Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz is set to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Montclair State University. The award will be presented during the university’s Winter Commencement on January 13 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Ruiz, who made history as the first Puerto Rican elected to the state Senate in 2007, currently holds the position of Senate Majority Leader, making her the highest-ranking Latina legislator in New Jersey’s history. She has also served as chair of the Senate Education Committee.

“Education is the foundation that shapes our future,” Ruiz stated. “A college education has the power to connect and inspire, unlock doors to transformative opportunities, and leave our communities better than how we found them. I am deeply honored to receive this honorary degree from Montclair State University.”

Throughout her legislative career, Ruiz has focused on advocating for families and children while addressing societal inequalities. She was instrumental in passing a 2013 law allowing undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities in New Jersey. In addition, she sponsored a 2017 law requiring guidelines for school districts to create supportive environments for transgender students.

Ruiz authored a 2016 law mandating that state-granted college loans be forgiven if a student borrower dies. Her efforts have also included limiting suspensions and expulsions of young students and promoting academic support for those with reading difficulties. Furthermore, she has worked towards expanding preschool access across New Jersey.

In recognition of her leadership potential, Ruiz was awarded an Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellowship in 2010 as one of America’s emerging political leaders known for intellect and commitment to civil dialogue. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Drew University and completed Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Executives program.

Montclair President Jonathan Koppell remarked on Ruiz’s contributions: “Senator Ruiz embodies Montclair’s mission of serving the public good… We are honored that she will address our graduates at Commencement.”
