Montclair State University Students Reflect on Transformative Spring Break Experiences

Montclair State University students embarked on diverse and eye-opening spring break adventures that expanded their perspectives and left lasting impressions. From exploring the frigid beauty of Iceland to delving into complex issues at a migrant camp in Arizona, these experiences challenged preconceptions and fostered personal growth.

Senior Earth and Environmental Science major, Emily Cepin, expressed her awe at the vastness of the world, stating, "My biggest takeaway? How big the world is." She marveled at the unique cultural experiences and natural wonders encountered during her trip to Iceland, emphasizing that photos could not capture the true essence of the landscapes.

Similarly, Sydney Huttemann, a senior Fashion Design and Merchandising major, highlighted the stark contrast between different ways of life, noting, "Just going into a different country and driving down the road and seeing how other people live, it’s totally different from driving down the streets of Montclair, for sure."

Associate Professor Thomas E. Franklin underscored the educational value of travel experiences, stating, "Travel experiences like this are the best form of education." He led School of Communication and Media students on a reporting trip to Arizona, where they delved into pressing issues such as immigration and homelessness.

Reflecting on the impactful journey, News Producer Steve McCarthy shared, "During our visit the Border Patrol raided the camp and detained a few dozen migrants. The migrants actually gave themselves up to ask for asylum." The emotional and thought-provoking experience prompted students to confront the realities faced by marginalized communities.

The spring break programs, which blend classroom learning with travel experiences, aim to broaden students' global awareness and cultivate intercultural skills. Director of International Academic Initiatives, Tim White, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in preparing students for a competitive edge in their future careers.

From studying low-carbon technologies in Austria to exploring theater in London and delving into geology in Iceland, students engaged in diverse learning opportunities that transcended traditional spring break destinations. The immersive experiences not only fostered academic growth but also forged lifelong connections and memories.

As Mariana Luna Martinez, a senior Biology major, aptly summarized, "The trip was indeed transformative and life-changing for me." These experiences serve as a testament to the enriching impact of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing new perspectives.

With each journey offering unique insights and moments of discovery, Montclair State University students emerged from their spring break experiences with a deeper appreciation for the world and a renewed sense of purpose.
